First Aid Advice - Wounds & Bleeding

With any form of wound the primary aim is to stop the bleeding, prevent infection and promote healing

To treat a wound follow the steps below

  • If there is a foreign body in the wound, do not attempt to remove it
  • Take a clean pad and place upon the wound
  • Apply direct pressure on the wound and maintain the pressure until the bleeding stops
  • Where possible, raise the level of the injured limb above the level of the heart

If there is a foreign body in the wound, place the pad around it rather than directly on top, and ensure the pressure applied is around the item

Further treatment will depend upon the nature of the wound. Once the bleeding has stopped, simple wounds can be dressed with a plaster or sterile dressing. More severe cuts will require attention to close them.
