First Aid Advice - Burns

Burns can be classified into a variety of types and treatment depends upon the severity of the burn and the mechanism of injury

The most common type of burn seen in the home is a scald from hot liquid - whether boiling water, soup etc

The immediate treatment of a burn can determine the eventual outcome

Start cooling the burn immediately by running under tepid water for at least ten minutes

Any burn larger than a postage stamp requires further medical treatment. All deep burns regardless of size require immediate medical attention

Regardless of the type of burn

  • Do not use lotions, ointments and creams
  • Do not use adhesive dressings
  • Do not burst blisters
