First Aid Advice - Bruises

Bruises are the result of internal bleeding under the skin. The older you are, the more easily bruising occurs. Bruises normally fade within a few days and aren't usually dangerous.

However, consider how the area was bruised as this can indicate further injury which may require additional treatment

Usually applying a cold compress within the first ten minutes will minimise bruising

Treatment
  • Raise the affected limb and make the patient comfortable
  • Apply a cold compress (may be ice pack, frozen peas etc)
  • Keep the cold compress in place for 30 minutes, changing it periodically to keep it cold
